On August 16 and 17, the American Truck Show Circuit (ATSC) made the third and final stop of its 2019 Summer Series in Kansas City, Missouri. 52 trucks gathered at Arrowhead Stadium for the Original Monster Stacks Shootout hosted by Dynaflex. It was the first year the Los Angeles based heavy-duty exhaust manufacturer hosted its annual truck show in Kansas City – quite the change of scenery from its beachfront venue the past three years in Ventura, California. The venue was quite impressive, however, with the magnitude of Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium serving as an epic backdrop for the truck show.
A little bit of weather mid-day Friday didn’t turn competitors away from getting their rides dialed-in for Judgment Day. As the drizzling stopped and the sun came out, competitors got right back into cleaning mode – a true testament to the dedication they have to their equipment. After a night of heavy winds and more rain, it was no surprise to see competitors back on the lot Saturday morning getting in their final wipe downs before “Rags Down” was called.
Judges made their rounds through the National Championship Series competitors, examining trucks and listening to driver presentations. Like other subjectively judged sports, the ATSC drops high and low scores from each judged category and averages the remaining scores for a single score. Judges individually score various parts of each truck in customization, cleanliness and theme electronically using iPads. Post event printed scorecards provide instant feedback to the competitors. The process makes for a fair, unbiased and transparent platform for custom builders, fleets and single truck operators to show off their equipment and hard work.
A few notable units battled it out in the National Championship Series – Mike Grim’s teal “Limited Budget” 2019 Peterbilt 389, Kyle Cousins’ cream and brown “The Duke” 2016 Kenworth W900L and Tony Huttenstine’s silver and maroon 2010 Kenworth W900L. Best of Show winners from the National Championship Series walked away with cash ($1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd and $250 for 3rd) and custom chrome-plated trophies made by Dynaflex Products. The more relaxed Wash and Show contest featured some standouts too – Bryan Pfershing’s black 2016 Kenworth W900L, David Koliha’s metallic gray and baby blue 2018 Peterbilt 389, and Charley Peaster’s 1993 Pete 379. Wash and Show competitors also got an exclusive entry to a product giveaway, as well as gift bags, meals and access to special on-site activities.
Throughout the weekend, competitors were able to partake in several exclusive activities provided by the event host. A huge draw was an opportunity to go on a private guided tour of Arrowhead Stadium and its facilities, including the locker room, field and press box. On Saturday night, Dynaflex treated everyone to barbequed burgers and hosted a fun poker tournament where Yeti products were up for grabs. Competitors could also redeem tickets for Dynaflex and Diesel Life shirts.
The Original Monster Stacks Shootout had value adding elements for spectators, too. A weekend highlight was the Display of Lights and Sound on both Friday and Saturday night. Industry brands gave away promo goodies, various local food trucks were parked at the venue throughout the weekend, and a Fun Zone was set up with free face painting, balloon twisting, coloring, inflatables, games and sweet treats for kids. Spectators also had the chance to vote for People’s Choice and Best Use of Chrome, a special award presented by Dynaflex.
ATSC closed out the event with its giveaways and award presentations on Sunday morning. Some of the big giveaways included a RoadWorks bumper, Dynaflex Products exhaust kit and Hogebuilt full and quarter fenders. Eric Turner took home People’s Choice for his 2015 Peterbilt 389 “Showtime” while Brandon Farley won Best Use of Chrome with his 2004 “Big Red” Peterbilt 379X.
The National Champions for the 2019 “Summer Series” were announced as well – Buck Crombie was crowned Elite Working Bobtail National Champ for his 1989 “Ruby” Peterbilt 379, Gary Jones earned the Elite Working Combo National title with his 1999 Peterbilt 379 “Excessive Behavior” and Doug Jameson won the Limited for Show Bobtail National Champion title for his 2019 “Here We Go Again” Peterbilt 389.
