Held in conjunction with the ChampTruck World Series truck race on May 22-24, 2015 at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California, the 1st annual Original Monster Stack Shootout, which was hosted and produced by Dynaflex, was a real wild west shootout! It was also the 2nd stop of the Pride & Polish National Truck Show Series.
The venue, which is about an hour north of Sacramento, out in the middle of nowhere, proved to be an isolated but good location. With space to stretch out, it was easy to park the 55 or so trucks in two long lines, with the combos on one side and the bobtails on the other. The participants showed up to compete for trophies, bragging rights, and a chance to qualify to be included in the national championships later this year at the GATS show in Dallas, Texas.
As the event’s main sponsor, Dynaflex Products organized most of the extra activities and did a great job setting up the show. To get into the show truck and vendor area, attendees had to walk under a 35-ft. tall inflatable arch, adorned with Dynaflex graphics. Once inside, they could walk the line of trucks, visit the many vendor booths, or get something to eat. Dynaflex, among many other things, fed the competitors and attendees a free dinner on Friday night (hamburgers and hot dogs), again on Saturday night (tri-tip and all the fixins), and a late lunch on Sunday (a taco bar). The meals were catered by the Thunderhill Grill, and Dynaflex wanted to thank Jim and his crew for all of the amazing food they prepared and served.
Being a show in California, some of the “usual suspects” who attend Pride & Polish events had to travel extra far, which kept a few of them away. But, there were also a few that don’t usually attend these shows that made the trek from places like Texas, Ohio, Utah, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Indiana. There were also several trucks from Nevada and Oregon, including the Best of Show Working Combo of Phil Miller and James Davis’ 1997 Peterbilt, which earned the Participant’s Choice award, respectively.
Other big winners included the gray and black Peterbilt of Travis Poulsen from Utah (Best of Show Limited Mileage Bobtail), the new black Peterbilt with lime green stripes owned by Eric Hassevoort of Michigan (Best of Show Working Bobtail), and California’s own Ray Rodriquez (Lil’ Ray) and his “Wicked” rig, covered with gothic murals (Best of Show Limited Mileage Combo).
In the more relaxed but still competitive “Wash & Show” classes, Bob Harley from Ohio took top honors in the bobtail class with his black 2015 Peterbilt 389, while Russ Roy of Kadon Trucking, a local from California, took home the 1st place trophy in the combo class with his beautiful two-tone blue 2007 Pete transfer.
Some other trucks that were lookin’ extra good included Darrick Divine’s red 2009 W900L Kenworth with a white stripe, Moe Whitchurch’s green and yellow 2008 International 9900i, and Brady Jensen’s maroon 2008 Peterbilt 389 with three cream-colored stripes. Not to be outdone by anyone, Arlyn and Linda Workman’s red and black 1986 Peterbilt 359 was lookin’ great, as was Rudy Ceja’s maroon and black, super-slammed and super clean 1997 Peterbilt 379 and Ravens flatbed. Hands down, the best antique was the stunning turquoise 1980 Peterbilt 359 owned by Oldland Distributing out of Oregon, and the best heavy-haul truck was J&L’s red, black and blue “Contender” 2015 Pete 389 from Missouri.
At the end of the truck races on Sunday afternoon (see the cover story for more details about the racing), all of the show trucks were allowed to do some “slow-roll” parade laps around the Thunderhill road course. It was a fun way to end an exciting weekend.
“There was some amazing equipment at the shootout, and we wanted to thank each and every one for coming out to our first show,” said Cory Pehrsson of Dynaflex Products. “We’re a family business and we wanted to make sure that everyone felt taken care of and appreciated, because they are! We hope to see everyone, and more, again next year at the shootout!”
