Dairies Give Way to Urban Sprawl
Story and Photo by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman

I only saw this rig once, in 1956, when it was parked on Anaheim-Telegraph Road near Trucker’s Paradise. The truck appears to be around a 1954 Peterbilt and the colors were yellow and black. At the time that this picture was taken, most of the dairies were based in the Norwalk/Cerritos area, so I would have to assume that Coast Hay was based in this part of Los Angeles. As we know, Norwalk and Cerritos gave way to urban sprawl, much like Ontario and Chino are doing today. Gone will be the days of the smell of cattle and the flies that go with it, only to be replaced by tract housing, large shopping centers and the gangs and drugs that go with urbanization. I personally will take the smell of cattle over that of urban sprawl! Anyone knowing the whereabouts of either Coast Hay or this Peterbilt can contact me through the magazine by calling toll free 1-888-440-4104.
