Sterling Transit Co. Inc. was based in Montebello, CA and had other facilities in Bakersfield, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco. Sterling was a major “player” in the movement of LTL freight into the 1980s. Just exactly when and why they became part of trucking history is not known to me. Seen here in this 1965 picture is a Kenworth cab-over, circa 1957, that was one of many such units that Sterling was running. At one time, Sterling had single-axle KWs with butterfly hoods that were pulling doubles around California. The red KW conventionals soon gave way to the cab-over models as seen here, and the red was replaced by a metallic brown. Later, even these KWs were to be replaced by International cab-overs. During their final years, Sterling was a popular participant in many of the local truck shows, both here and in Las Vegas. Their beautiful 1964 International Emeryville, a clean Ford city tractor and a 1955 White Freightliner, dubbed “Classic Lady”, were a familiar sight to all that attended the 1980s truck shows. Anyone that can tell me exactly when and why Sterling Transit closed their doors can contact me at the magazine by calling toll free 1-888-440-4104. Thanks!
