This picture is part of my collection of old truck photos, and though I did not take this picture, I thought that I would share it with you readers. The picture was taken either in the 1940s or early 1950s, depicting one of the many dark green Sterlings owned by Western Truck Lines of Los Angeles, California. Set up as a truck and trailer, Western, along with its sister company Cantlay & Tanzola Tank Lines, blazed a trail in trucking history that many old-timers still remember. In the late 1950s, Western merged with Gillette Freight Lines in Texas, thus forming Western Gillette Truck Lines. With this formation of two large LTL carriers, Western’s operating authority extended from California to Texas, with inter-lining service from other carriers that gave Western Gillettte capabilities to run into other parts of the country. I don’t know exactly when or why Western Gillette became part of trucking history, however, they were operating into the 1980s. If anyone can shed some light on the demise of Western Gillette, please contact me by calling toll free 1-888-440-4104.
