Generally, this article features
truckers and companies that are no longer around. Not so with this story.
In 1933, Bob McLean of Tacoma, Washington, started a company with one
truck. Today, with over 2,000 pieces of equipment running coast-to-coast,
Interstate Distributing is one of the nation’s largest truckload operations.
Hauling loads for some of this country’s top retail giants, the Interstate
rigs can be seen anywhere. However, there was a time when the sight of
an Interstate rig was rare in the Los Angeles area. This picture, taken
around 1958, shows truck #6. During the 1950s, butterfly hood Kenworths
were the truck of choice by many outfits, and Interstate was no different.
While Interstate Distributing still has KWs, their current fleet also
consists of Freightliners, Peterbilts, Internationals and Volvos. The
dark green color of the past gave way to a brighter shade of metallic
green, but the Interstate logo remained the same - white stripe and all. |
