Nelson B. Allen, based in
Montebello, California, ran a small fleet of Kenworth conventionals in
the Golden State in the 1950s and early 1960s. His dark green and white
KWs (like the one seen here) were a familiar sight on the freeways, hauling
steel to the many construction sites throughout California. It is rumored
that Nelson had a red KW cabover that was leased to Universal/Waste King
of Vernon, hauling kitchen appliances cross country, long before Bert
Rapp took over the haul, but I cannot be sure of this. I don’t know why
or when the Nelson Allen rigs faded into trucking history, but I would
say that it was in the 1960s. The Allen rigs sported little or no chrome,
but for their time, these rigs were state-of-the-art. Any of you out there
that can shed some light on this small fleet of Kenworths can reach me
through the magazine by calling 1-888-440-4104. |
