Long before chrome bumpers
were in style, truckers painted their front bumpers with safety stripes.
It is not known if these safety stripes actually prevented any highway
accidents, but they were a very common sight both for the larger fleets
and with the owner operators. Pictured here is in this 1956 photo, is
Gordon Loeffler’s yellow and blue LT Mack, parked at Joe Cabral’s yard
in Montebello, California. Based in West Covina, Gordon ran California
and Oregon hauling flatbed commodities like this load of steel. The LT
Mack was considered by many in trucking as, “The Duesenberg of Diesels.”
LTs were made from 1947 to 1957, and the only mistake that Mack made was
to discontinue this classic model. Notice the twin stacks... when was
the last time you saw twin stacks that were not chromed? The LT Mack is
fast becoming the truck to restore and to bring to truck shows. |
