  TERRY’S BLACK BEAUTIES

Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman

Pictured in this 1964 photo, taken in Nogales, Arizona, was a 1963 Kenworth owned by Terry Kennedy, dba Kennedy Enterprises. This KW was one of eight in the fleet and all had “twin sticks” backed by a Detroit Diesel with 318 horsepower. Colors of the Kennedy fleet were all black, offset by two white stripes. These rigs were later to become part of the fleet of steel hauling rigs of S & H Truck Lines of South Gate, California. Kennedy updated his fleet, buying longer, wide hood KWs of the 1960s, from Valley Kenworth of Fresno. These newer trucks featured 1693 Cat engines. Along with the new fleet, a new name appeared on the doors, as Far West replaced Kennedy Enterprises, but the familiar colors remained the same. The Far West rigs ran produce from Nogales to Seattle in around 36 hours, which is pretty impressive even by today’s standards. In addition to hauling fruit and produce, the Far West fleet hauled their share of beer and wine. Loads coming out of the north consisted of apples and cranberries. Terry Kennedy, operating as Kennedy Enterprises and Far West, was around for about ten years. I would love to hear from anyone knowing the whereabouts of Terry Kennedy.
