  TRUCKS SHOOTING THE TUBE

Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman

Pictured here, cruising down Tube Way in Commerce, California is a late model 1950s or early 1960s Kenworth cab-over owned by Paxton Truck Lines of Montebello. For over 30 years, the dark green Paxton rigs were seen hauling steel and related commodities all over California and in the nearby Western states. Paxton’s yard, in the late 1950s through the 1970s, was located on Greenwood Avenue (like so many others in trucking), just north of Anaheim-Telegraph Road. The fleet of Paxton tractors consisted of Kenworths, Peterbilts, Autocars and White-Freightliners. The company also had some leased rigs that hung the Paxton sign on the doors of their trucks. I don’t know if deregulation or organized labor had anything to do with the demise of Paxton, but they have been gone from the trucking scene for over 20 years now. If any of you old timers out there that can tell me what happened to Paxton Truck Lines, I’d love to hear from you. Please contact me through the magazine by calling 1-888-440-4104.
