HOPPER TRUCK LINE’S OLD TIMERS Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman Seen in this 1957 photo is a Diamond T cab-over going south on Greenwood Avenue, enroute to its Montebello (CA) terminal. The owner, Hopper Truck Lines, was based in Phoenix, but had its Los Angeles yard in Montebello. Back in the 1950s, Montebello was the center for all of trucking in the Los Angeles area. Hopper hauled LTL freight from California into Arizona, and returned with loads of Arizona cattle. This was accomplished by steam-cleaning the bodies and trailers after the cattle were unloaded and before freight found its way onboard for the return trip to Arizona. Colors of the Hopper fleet (which was mostly made up of Kenworths and White Freightliners) were a dark red and white. Hopper “bit the dust” in 1971, becoming part of ONC which in turn was bought up by McLean Freight Lines who, in turn, went out of business in 1986. I would like to hear from any of the old timers that drove for Hopper Truck Lines. Please contact me through the magazine by calling (714) 378-9990. I look forward to talking with you. |
