BAFF’S OLD WATERING HOLE IN L.A. Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman This picture, taken in the late 1950s, shows a 1950s model Diamond T, leased to Pyramid Van Lines, a “bedbug” hauling outfit that was established in 1928 and was based near San Francisco, California. Colors of the Pyramid rigs, during the time of this photo, were a maroon color, offset by a cream stripe and lettering. A few years later, their colors changed to reflect a more contemporary trend, that of white with green and blue stripes and lettering. It is not known who the trucker was that owned this rig, but it is seen here hooked to a 35’ Fruehauf single-axle furniture van. Location of this picture was on Eastern Avenue, just north of Valley Boulevard, near the El Sereno area of Los Angeles. A lot of bedbug rigs parked here as there was a famous “watering hole” called Baff’s Bar, which quenched the thirst of many a furniture hauler. I would like to hear from anybody that remembers Baff’s or, for that matter, Pyramid Van Lines. Contact me through the magazine at (714) 378-9990. |
