LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT’S NUMBER 37 Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman Pictured here, at the long-gone Los Angeles Union Stockyards in Vernon, California, was old Number 37, a “Cherrypicker” International owned by John Shubin Sr., dba Livestock Transport of El Monte, California. This truck and trailer featured a Brewster Green (a GMC color) cab with a white front end and stripe alongside the cab, and a Forest Green wooden livestock body and pull trailer. The trailer was made by Fruehauf and Charlie Walcott built both the body for the truck, as well as the trailer body. Power came via a Cummins engine with 200 horsepower, backed by a 5-speed main and 3-speed auxiliary transmission. Livestock Transport went out of business in 1972, but, when he was in business, John had as many as 27 livestock rigs running into both Arizona and Nevada... as well as all over California. Besides Internationals, the Livestock Transport fleet consisted of GMCs, Sterlings, KWs, Peterbilts and White Freightliners that had “Penthouse” sleepers mounted atop their cabs (see page 36 in my first book, American Semi Trucks). |
