  Trucks That Look Like Trucks

Words and Photos by Truck Historian/Author Stan Holtzman

In this 1967 picture, taken behind Steve’s Richfield Truck Stop (located near Washington and Alameda Street in L.A.), we see an early 1960s model W925 Kenworth which was operated by Curtis, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. In the early 1960s, Kenworth came out with one of the first wide-hood trucks. This model is my favorite KW ever built, as it combined the traditional smaller windshield and cab of the 1940s thru the early 1960s, with the fiberglass, tilting, wide hood that is found on today’s big rigs... this KW looked like a truck!!! Colors of this beauty were metallic purple with a white stripe outlined in gold. Though I can’t recall much about this rig, Curtis, home-based in Denver, was a large carrier of perishable cargo. There were no standard colors or trucks for the Curtis fleet - truckers were free to choose what make and color that they wanted. I don’t know exactly when or why Curtis bit the dust, but it was in the 1970s.
