LONG MAY SHE WAVE

In 1949, President Truman signed into law that June 14th would be recognized as Flag Day.  Our flag is rich in history and honor.  It is amazing the feeling one gets when the flag is raised in a ceremony or carried in a parade.  Our heart swells and our pride shows that this flag is a symbol to the world of the inspiration that has evolved from a nation of immigrants.  For over two centuries, our flag has signified to the world that this is a land of freedom and liberty!  At first there were many flags in the colonies, but on June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act.  This act established an official flag called the “Stars and Stripes” for our fledging new country.  It was composed of 13 stripes (7 red alternating with 6 white) and in the upper left-hand corner there was a blue field representing a new constellation with 13 stars.  The 13 stars and stripes represented the original 13 colonies: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.  Over the years, the flag has been updated to reflect the ever-increasing number of states in the republic.  Today, of course, our current flag, which has 50 stars, was adopted on July 4, 1960 when Hawaii became our 50th state.  Born in revolution where the Fathers of the Republic devoted their lives, honor and their fortunes so she may be flown with pride, this flag emboldens most present-day Americans.  Wherever she bravely waves, our flag, also known as Old Glory, is the symbol of strength and inspiration for freedom to the world.  So on this Flag Day, Monday, June 14th, raise a flag high at your home or business (or even on your truck) to show your neighbors and the world the pride that you still have in our Stars and Stripes!
