GIFTS FROM THE HEART
The Holidays are fast approaching. Many of you may not have the funds to support your usual shopping spree of Christmas cheer this year. After paying for the mortgage/rent, groceries, utilities, gas and emergencies, there is not much left for presents. So, how are you going to Christmas shop this year? It is a fact that even in good times many people get the “Holiday blues” around Christmas – but don’t fall into a funk. Your children can feel the agitation in your household. Every person, whether it is an adult or a child, wants to understand what is happening in their lives. The uncertainty of the unknown is much worse than just facing what is before you and tackling the issues. I recommend that you gather your loved ones together and have a family meeting about how the Holidays will be different this year. Ask your children for suggestions about how Holiday money should be spent and include everyone in the discussion. Dealing with a “crisis” together can actually bring the family closer. Discuss ways to limit your gift list, and keep gifts to just immediate family and special friends. People will understand – they are probably in the same boat. Instead of buying gifts for everyone, put names in a jar and let each person pick out one name. It is far easier to concentrate on one gift than on ten. You may even want to make a challenge out of your shopping – see who can make or buy the best gift for the least amount of money. You can also set limits on spending, or limit your gifts to practical items like clothing. Encourage this type of creative thinking – it gives rise to a new type of responsibility. It also builds character and gives your kids a sense of accomplishment when they pick out or make the perfect gift – and it doesn’t cost a small fortune. Remember, it is not the expensive gifts that matter on Christmas, but the gift of love that is remembered and shared with family and friends all year long!
