Words of Wisdom from SharLeigh
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN,
REST IN PEACE, DAD
Last year I did a Father’s Day article on my dad, William Joseph Glavic. It was a true record of his generation. Sadly, my dad passed away on September 3, 2009 – he was 85 years old. He was a child of the Great Depression, a World War II veteran, a hard working dad, and a man that had a very full and interesting life. He was of a generation that did everything for kin and country. The day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he went to the local recruiting station and signed up for the Navy. The war turned a 17-year-old boy into a 21-year-old man. He never forgot those years he served for his country, which defined who he was in his adult life. It was an exciting time in the United States after World War II – it became a land of plenty. When my dad got out of the service he married my mom, and by 1949 he was able to purchase a small house. It wasn’t much, but it was ours! Dad was the only man in the house – one man to three women, and only one bathroom. When my sister and I became teenagers we were always in the bathroom. Eventually, he gave in and built a bathroom in the basement. My Dad enjoyed his three grandchildren, and in the twilight of his life he was blessed with two great-grandchildren. There were times when my dad was very quiet – it was like he was reliving certain aspects of his life. He did everything that life required and never questioned it. But there was something missing – something he could never figure out. Finally, in his last days, he found what he had been searching for – it was the Lord! What a gift to him and the family. Once he took that leap of faith it became clear to him what his purpose was on this earth. He knew he was leaving us but he also knew that we would be with him again. Goodbye dad – now you know that love does go on to eternity. Until we meet again, rest in peace, dad.
