COMMUNICATION OVERLOAD
Time flies whether you are having fun or not! In this modern day, everyone can relate to that fact. When we were children, time seemed to pass slower and families spent more time together – we even ate breakfast and dinner with each other as a family. No one had to rush off. We sat down and actually talked to one another and truly interacted. Sitting down to eat was social time for the family with no interruptions! There was only one television and it was in the living room. During the day, children played out of doors and when the family got together they played board games or cards. Do you remember the telephone rules of common courtesy? When a person made a call they were to let the telephone ring at least 10 times. That would allow the other party time to get to the ringing telephone because each household had only one phone (and it was attached to the wall via a cord). Today, there are so many distractions – like laptops, e-mail, cell phones and text messaging – people are being bombarded with constant communication. It makes one think how we ever got things done before these things were invented. Before all of this modern communication, the workplace pace was slower and simpler, and work did not begin until you got there. And, amazingly enough, things still somehow got done. Nowadays, wherever one goes they can see people on their cell phone or texting – it has gotten so bad that one can hear people using cell phones in restroom stalls! People even bring their laptops into coffee houses. What is happening to us? This manic behavior is taking time from our families. We are so busy being in constant communication that the paradox of the situation is that we are in constant isolation. How do we solve this problem? Try turning off all communication tools when you get home – forget about work for a while and interact with your family. It just may make your life more worthwhile and less hectic!
