READERS AND THEIR RIGS - AUGUST 2004

Willard Good’s New (Old) Mack

This month’s Readers And Their Rigs comes to us from Willard Good of Denver, Pennsylvania. Willard was introduced to 10-4 when he saw us at the truck show in Louisville, KY last March and picked up a free poster and some magazines. He was so impressed that he not only signed up for a subscription, but also wrote a letter and sent it to us, along with a few pictures of his fabulous 1954 LT Mack. The truck, purchased back in 1997, was hauled home in pieces. Early on, Willard decided that he would do whatever it took, in regards to time and money, to give this old Mack a new life - and to do it right. Six years and many dollars later, he was finally finished. The truck, which features an E-9 V8 Mack engine and a 13-speed double overdrive transmission, was rebuilt on top of a 1995 Western Star chassis. Denver Truck Painting in Pennsylvania did most of the frame and body work, while a neighbor (and Mack enthusiast) did the mechanical work. Willard then installed a custom bunk, specially fabricated for the truck, which was made to look like an old Mercury sleeper. Painted indigo blue with white stripes, this rig also features WTI fiberglass full fenders and a gorgeous blue and tan interior with a wood floor and lots of chrome and gauges. Willard, who has been trucking since 1978, hauls grain and other commodities locally to his family’s feed mill. Although he also owns a 1981 KW that he runs daily, he takes the Mack out at least once a week. He recently drove it to the show in Walcott, Iowa and bagged two first place trophies. Married for 20 years, Willard and his wife Flo have three children - Austin (14), Emily (11) and Dillon (5).
