READERS AND THEIR RIGS - JUNE 2004

A Fascination With KW COE's

This month’s “Readers And Their Rigs” comes to us from Kevin Geltmaker of Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Kevin (26) and his father Stuart (58) have been longtime fans of Kenworth K100 Aerodyne cabovers - so much so, that both of these gentlemen each own one just for the fun of it. Stuart began driving trucks in the early 1970s working for his brother’s excavating company. He drove souped-up dump trucks for years, but they were always company-owned pieces of equipment. What he really wanted was a truck of his own to fix up. As time went on, the dump trucks and excavating company were phased out, but Stuart stayed in the business and went on to become a heavy equipment operator, which he still is today. In 1998 he purchased the 1979 KW K100 Aerodyne pictured here with the sole purpose of chroming it out and taking it to shows. Featuring a 3408 Cat V-8 engine with direct injection, a 15-speed transmission backed by 3.90 rears, (10) aluminum wheels, 180-inch wheelbase, 8-inch stacks, and lots of extra lights and chrome, Stuart is very proud of his old red, black, white and gold rig. Living just across the river from the site of the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Stuart hasn’t missed a show since 1973. He hopes to enter this truck into the beauty competition next year. In addition to this cool ride, Stuart’s son Kevin just acquired a nearly identical 1980 K100. The only difference between their two trucks is that Kevin’s is a different color and features a 13-speed tranny and 4.11 rears. He still needs to do some work to it, but, overall, it’s in good shape. Both Stuart and Kevin keep up with what’s going on at 10-4 through our website (www.tenfourmagazine.com). We suggest that you do the same (if you can’t find a magazine, of course). Thanks!
