Marc McElroy, You “Sly Dog”
This month’s Readers and Their Rigs comes to us from Marc McElroy of Grand Terrace, California. Marc (47) has been with C.R. England for the last seven years of his seventeen-year trucking career. Dubbed “Sly Dog” by one of his early orientation instructors because of his ability to get top pay without having as much experience as the rest of his newly-hired peers, Marc primarily runs between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City in one of England’s “Premier Lease” trucks (a 2001 Freightliner Classic XL). Marc has been in England’s lease program since its inception, and, because of that fact, will soon have the opportunity to purchase his truck through their “Master Premier Lease” program. Ordered specifically for him, England let Marc select the color (Garnett Red) as well as many of the truck’s other options. Later, Marc added a drop-down visor, aluminum full fenders, a custom front bumper, lots of extra chrome, and 135 lights (all of which will be upgraded to LEDs in the next few months). Marc is looking forward to the day when he can buy the truck, remove its governor, and see what that 500 Detroit under the hood can really do. Recently getting into the truck show scene, Marc has taken home a few trophies already (a 1st Place in Salt Lake City and a 2nd Place in Palmdale) but hopes to do even better this year. He can hardly wait for the 2004 truck show season to start, looking to attend at least three or four shows this year. When he’s not trucking or attending a show, Marc likes to relax and spend time with his family (especially his three grandkids). “Sly Dog” usually picks up his copy of 10-4 at a truck stop in Jean, Nevada, where he frequently stops for coffee.
