READERS AND THEIR RIGS - AUGUST 2003

A COMPANY THAT STILL CARES

This month’s Readers And Their Rigs comes to us from Craig Smith of Valley Springs, CA. Craig is a driver for George Perry & Sons, Inc. based in Manteca, CA. Craig (28) has been driving trucks since he was 14 years old. Growing up in the bay area, Craig was introduced to trucking by his father who was an Owner Operator. Having been with the company for a year now, Craig had nothing but good things to say about his employers. “It’s a family owned business, ran the way businesses used to be run - with honesty and integrity. You don’t find that too often any more,” said Craig. George Perry & Sons is one of the largest shippers and handlers of pumpkins and watermelons in California. By building relationships with growers and shippers from Mexico to Central California, the company is able to supply watermelons and squash 365 days a year to their customers. The Perry family has grown over the years and now has the fourth generation working in the business. Currently, brothers George Jr. and Art Perry run the operation. Art told us that Craig really loves trucks and that “he’ll drive all day and polish half of the night - day in, day out - and love it!” Craig’s truck is a 1998 Pete 377 with a 475 HP 3406E Cat and a 13-speed transmission. Craig keeps his white and red rig super clean (which drives his wife crazy). Running hard year round, Craig hauls throughout most of California and Arizona. Married for seven years, Craig and his wife have two young children.
