FAST FUN IN “MOTOR CITY” This month’s Readers And Their Rigs comes
to us from a new reader in Detroit, Michigan. Dave Gray picked up his
first copy of 10-4 at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville last
March and really liked it. In fact, he immediately wrote a letter and
sent it to us, along with a few photos, of his “Red Devil” race truck.
The truck is 1970 GMC 9500 with an 8V92 Detroit and Allison transmission.
Of course, the engine has been completely re-worked and tweaked for
maximum power. Although the truck has not yet competed, Dave has taken
it out to the local drag strip and turned 13’s in the quarter-mile at
a speed of 108 MPH. Presently, Dave is installing twin turbos under
the hood so the truck is only going to get faster. Finding the number
in 10-4, Dave recently called and then joined the Diesel Drag Racing
Association and plans to attend as many of their sanctioned races as
possible. But it’s all just for fun. The bright red racer features polished
aluminum wheels, a custom-built aluminum box on the back which houses
the batteries and fuel cell, and polished aluminum quarter fenders.
After 25 years of working on truck suspensions, Dave (57) opened his
own shop in Detroit. Working hard for the last 12 years, Dave has built
his shop, Certified Alignment & Suspension, into one of the largest
in the Midwest. With 11 service bays and 17 employees, it’s hard to
find time for fun, but Dave always finds a way. He’s doing his part
to revitalize Detroit’s gear-head reputation and helping to put the
“motor” back in “Motor City” where it belongs. |
