Old Rig Brings Back Memories

While Jeff Venable was a kid growing up in the mountains of North Carolina, one of the most memorable things that he remembers was watching the many trucks that passed his home. But, there was one truck that stood out from all the rest – a 1963 White 9000 TD that always pulled a huge D-7 Cat dozer. This truck, which had a 220 Cummins diesel with straight-pipe exhaust, sounded much better to Jeff than any of the other trucks that passed. Over the years, the White was replaced with a Mack, and Jeff spotted the old White sitting in the back lot of the construction company that owned it. He found out the White had blown its motor, so there it sat. For several years Jeff kept his eye on that truck, and finally asked the owner if he would sell it. He answered, “If you’ll restore it, you can have it.” It sat for a few years until Jeff finally started working on it. The restoration took about two years of nights and weekends to finish. Parts came from several different states, and Jeff made many new friends throughout the process – including a few at the bank! The end result is the beautiful rig seen here. When Jeff and his wife drive the old truck around town, kids always motion for him to blow the horn. This always brings back Jeff’s fond childhood memories of the truck, and his only regret is that his father did not live to see him buy and restore the old White.
