A few months ago, as I was entering bad weather, I spotted Kevin Michelson (33) of Ocheyedan, IA just starting his trip. I asked him about his truck and what he hauls, and he said, “I grew up in northwest Iowa and been into cool trucks my whole life. I always wanted a really cool one of my own, and finally had this one built to my specs in the beginning of 2018. I haul a lot of ice cream, but mainly stay in the Midwest.” I asked him how it feels to push such a nice piece of equipment into a violent storm and he responded, “That never bothers me much. The job still has to get done, no matter what the weather is. I’m not one that’s going to deliver a load late due to a little weather. Learn to feel what your tires are doing on the road – if they’re gripping or slipping. I also like to keep an eye on spray off the tires. When roads are wet and it’s around the freezing mark, no spray means it’s getting slick. I’d say just use your head. Drive the speed you feel comfortable with and don’t rush it.” Build your dream, don’t lose faith and make a lifetime career of it. Now, that’s the Spirit of the American Trucker!
