Larry Legro of Neenah, Wisconsin owns this 1948 Peterbilt DT344 COE flatbed. The 344 was one of the first Peterbilt cabovers built on a conventional frame, and sits three inches higher than the 350. This Peterbilt was built as a low-mount 344, but then it was fitted with a bubblenose cab. Colliers Transport of Santa Rosa, California was the original owner. Larry bought the truck from Harold Harlen of Santa Rosa, CA in 1997. It took five years and $70,000 to restore the truck – a project that lasted from 1999 to 2004. In addition to restoring the truck, Larry installed a 270 Cummins engine. To accompany his old cabover, Larry restored a 20-foot 1947 Reliance trailer in matching colors of Caterpillar yellow and forest green. He also owns three more Peterbilt cabovers that he is in the process of restoring, including a 351, a 352H and a 372. In addition to collecting and restoring Peterbilts, Larry holds the “World’s Best Liar” title for 2009. The story that won the title? “I just realized how bad the economy really is – I recently bought a new toaster oven and as a complimentary gift I was given a bank!” By day, Larry works as an inspector of medical radiation devices, but he hopes to enjoy a long half-life after he finally retires.
