BUILDING A LEGACY
THE LATEST PROJECT FROM CLINT MOORE
This month’s “creation” was built for Clint’s longtime customer and friend Tommy “2-Stick” Devlin of Andover, Kansas. But this one was no easy build - thanks to many glitches, problems, and even some legal issues, this baby took over two years to finally complete. Clint always talks about how he loves his job - well, this one put that “love” to the test.
Reviewing a little of Tommy’s history, he did not grow up in a trucking family, but that did not stop him. In 2000, Tommy bought a nice W900L daycab and aluminum end dump and ran local near his home. In 2003, Tommy contacted Clint and ordered a new 2004 2-tone green and gold Peterbilt 379 with a flattop sleeper, which he used for several years, hauling grain locally.
In 2006, Tommy was ready to upgrade, so Clint ordered his next truck - a 2007 Peterbilt 379 flattop with a long 300” wheelbase. Clint, Tommy, his dad (Tom) and his brother (Tim) all went to Denton, Texas together to watch the truck be built. Everybody was pretty excited, even the guys at the factory, because this truck was one of the last to get a factory 3-color paint scheme. The truck was soon thereafter delivered to Clint’s shop and then the customizing began - but this is when everything got interesting.
Tommy has always wanted a “numbered” Peterbilt. When he was younger, he remembers the last 359’s were all limited editions that were numbered - he always thought that was cool, and he always wanted to own a limited edition Pete. About this time, Peterbilt announced that the 379 was going to be replaced with the 389, and that the last 1,000 Peterbilt 379’s would be limited edition numbered trucks. As you might guess, Tommy wanted one, so Clint put in the order and then finished his other truck and sold it.
Tommy’s favorite color has always been blue, so they ordered the truck with a dark blue GMC color. Tommy and Clint met again in Denton on the day the truck was being built (1/26/07) to watch the entire process - who knew it would take two-and-a-half years from that date to complete the project! This truck would not have been possible without the folks at Peterbilt Motors in Denton, all the guys at K.C. Peterbilt (especially Leonard), Jimmy Crain, the folks at Double Eagle, Jeff Battler at 12 Ga. Customs, Carl at Rockwood, Signs by Robbie, Tommy (for being so patient), and his lovely wife Holly (for being a saint).
The truck is a 2007 Peterbilt Legacy Edition (#488) with a 600 C-15 Cat, factory 2-sticks, 10-speed with a manual 4-speed auxiliary, 300” wheelbase, Low-Leaf suspension, a car-hauler front axle, a formulated dark blue paint job with a basecoat clear and matching frame. The truck also has a 60” flattop Double Eagle sleeper with a ribbed skin, a flip-up bumper, 359 double-round headlights on OEM 359 brackets and a bowtie visor. Other exterior features include flush deck plate, rear light bar, stainless steel low rider half fenders with hidden brackets, stainless boxes with a unique fan pattern and rounded edges, and a factory installed Luberfiner.
The interior of the truck has undergone some major changes as well, including a black dash with walnut panels from Rockwood, every rocker switch was changed to a toggle, real antique barn wood was used for the floor of the cab, custom COE-style overhead stainless box with radio, CB and heater controls up top, a tilt steering column, and velour low-rider seats. There is just not enough room to list all of the things that were done to this one-of-a-kind rig. There were countless amounts of changes made to help give this awesome limited edition Peterbilt its understated classic look.
At times, both Tommy and Clint just wanted this truck to go away - it has tried and tested many relationships. But in the end, it just goes to show that love endures - it ain’t always easy, but it endures - and it sure is cool when everything comes together. Clint loves his job and he loves his friends and, in the end, a Legacy was built!
