Have you ever noticed how often there’s someone cruising along in your blind spot? They don’t seem interested in passing you, and God forbid they actually back off and just merge in behind you. Instead, they just hang out alongside your big rig for miles upon miles, as if they weren’t aware you were even there. And it’s even worse if it’s raining and they don’t have their lights on, or if it’s dark outside and they won’t dim their high beams in your mirror. On another note, we all know how country songs tend to be stereotyped – the guy in the song loses his job, his wife, his truck, and his dog – you know the rest. Well, this month I decided to write something on the lighthearted side – a humorous “woe-is-me” tale about a guy who seems to be losing the company of all his friends and family but recognizes that there is always someone there he can count on to be by his side.
THERE YOU ARE…
By Trevor Hardwick
Well the bossman just informed me,
that my haul is drying up.
I guess nothing lasts forever so they say.
My woman says she’s leaving,
And she took the kids and pup.
And hopes that I’ll get over her someday.
But there you are…
Always right beside me in a God-forsaken car.
There you are…
Rain or shine or day or night you’re never far.
There you are!
My mother told me not to call,
My brother anymore.
My sister scratched my number from her phone.
My dog was s’posed to be my best friend,
Right up ‘til the end.
But now he’s found another dog-gone home.
But there you are…
For someone in a hurry you ain’t gettin’ very far.
There you are…
Sometimes you’re in a rig but you’re often in a car.
There you are!
My friends all disregard me,
And my in-laws think I’m dead.
That girl who turns me on just turned me down.
Just when I start thinking,
I might wind up all alone.
All I have to do is look around.
Cuz there you are…
The most annoying motorist I’ve known by far.
There you are…
With my signal blinking it must look a bit bizarre.
Cuz there you are!
I can always count on you to keep me company,
And there you’ll be…
I could lose my wife my dog my kids and family,
And there you’ll be…
Beside my trailer in the lane right next to me,
There you’ll be… faithfully!
