How can one describe the job of being a mother? It is not easy – think about it for a moment. Okay, how about chief cook and bottle washer, home economist, anger management coach, teacher’s aide, working woman, elegant lady and sergeant major. The job requires a great amount of juggling! With all these job titles, you would have to pay someone a fortune to accomplish the tasks. But mothers never ask for a dime – they just smile and put one foot in front of the other and get it done. My grandmother used to tell me that she thought once her daughters were adults that her job would be finished, but she found out that once you are a mother, you have that role for the rest of your life. I never understood those words until I became a mother. When you first look at your little one a bond is formed, and you realize how dependent they are on you. It is more than just cleaning, feeding and caring for them – you realize how much love that little soul needs, to feel comfort in this new world. Many become instant mothers when, through marriage, they become a step-mother. It is a rough road, because bonds of trust and love must be forged with these children. That type of trust and stability is formed through stages (often you feel as if you are taking one step forward and two steps back). How many times have you heard that children do not come with instructions? Each little one is truly an individual and each of them must be handled differently. Many of us had stay-at-home moms, breakfast and dinner were always cooked and the family was seated around the table to eat and talk. But, for many, those days are a thing of the past. Now, many mom’s balance a career, parenthood and run a home. But, no matter how we balance the load, the job of mother comes first. Those little ones are under our care and responsibility until they can leave the nest. Sometimes, when one is going through life with teenagers, it seems like it will never end – but it does. Life is hectic as a mom, but we must always remember through good times and bad, our love must shine through us. The children need the stability and firm foundation from you and your spouse. If you are a single mother, the whole burden rests on you. No matter what type of mom you are, it is our responsibility to give the children the tools to help them enter the adult world. No job worth doing is easy. Yes, it is a bumpy road, but one that has rewards when you see them blossom into adults. There are no medals for this job, but we are given a well-deserved “Mother’s Day” each year. To all the hard-working moms and moms-to-be, relax and enjoy your day!
