Aren’t we all just a little bit fickle? We want one thing, and then when we have it, we find ourselves wanting something else. That trait can be quite exhausting if it’s mixed with indecisiveness. Have you ever been considering your route for the trip you’re taking, but you can’t decide if you want to take Path A or Path B? Then, when you decide one way, you can’t help thinking the other route may have been better? Heck, I even do that in the lines at the truck wash or fuel islands! Having options is great but being indecisive leads me to feeling torn between a wise decision or settling for a lesser evil. Thankfully, most of the things I tend to be torn about are relatively trivial things – the Lord helps me with discernment when it matters most. I hope you enjoy this poem about indecisiveness. And, if not, that’s okay, too. The pages in this magazine are made of paper, and this page can be easily “torn” up if you don’t like it (but I would hope you wouldn’t do that)!
ALWAYS TORN
By Trevor Hardwick
I’m coming to a crossroads,
And I’m finding myself torn.
Do I take the road less traveled,
Or the one a bit more worn?
I tend to lean more frequently,
On charting my own course.
But sometimes I feel torn between,
A wild or broken horse.
I’m torn between the open road,
Or spending time at home.
I’m torn between the painted look,
Or polished steel and chrome.
I’m torn between a simple style,
Or lots of chicken lights.
I’m fickle when I’m torn between,
The daytime or the night.
I’m not so indecisive,
Then again I’m not so sure.
I’m torn between the kid in me,
And something more mature.
I’m torn between a flat-top Pete,
Or a short and slanted hood.
That’s a lie, to tell the truth,
In that regard I’m good.
At first I used the word respect,
Then changed it to regard.
I’m torn between the two,
‘Cause writing poetry is hard.
It ain’t much fun to be so torn,
When clarity’s a must.
And being indecisive,
Makes my instincts hard to trust.
I’m torn between the views I see,
And which ones I like best.
The rolling hills back east,
Or the mountains in the west?
All these things I’m mentioning,
Are trivial, that’s true.
I’m torn between my comfort zone,
And trying something new.
We all will face dilemma,
Since the day that we are born.
Just pray for more discernment,
And you might not feel so torn.
