On July 19 and 20, the American Truck Show Circuit (ATSC) made the second stop of its 2019 Summer Series at Remington Park Racing and Casino in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where 76 trucks gathered for the Bells & Whistles Showdown. This year’s event marked the third year the Oklahoma City based chrome shop Bells & Whistles has thrown down in a big way to give back to the local and national trucking community. Established in 2009, Bells & Whistles is Oklahoma’s largest and fastest growing truck parts and accessories provider, known for its exceptional installations, customizations, customer service and friendly shop vibe.
The weather was hot as was the competition on the lot for the ATSC National Championship Series. The highly competitive National Championship Series brought out a remarkable group of rides from Oklahoma and surrounding states including Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. A few notable rides on display – Ron Toon’s blue 1995 Peterbilt 379 (Ole Blue), Kaleb Hammett’s gray and red 2017 Peterbilt 389 (Ya Savvy?), Tim Cody Jr’s white and baby blue 2018 Peterbilt 389 (Keep Throwing Money At It) and Doug Jameson’s white and red 2019 Peterbilt 389 (Here We Go Again).
A solid group of units showed up for the lightly competitive Wash and Show, as well. A few standouts – Cody Lindamood’s 2007 Peterbilt 379 (Legacy), Derek Bridgman’s black and orange 1999 Pete 379 (Poken Fun), Kim Weiler’s white 2019 Kenworth W900L (White Out) and Trevin Walck’s white 2005 Kenworth T600 (Ugly Betty). If you haven’t brought out your truck to an ATSC event yet, the Wash and Show is an epic way to experience all the competitor perks, which include a gift bag, event shirt, meal for two and exclusive giveaway entry.
National Championship Series judging commenced at the announcement of “Rags Down” early Saturday morning. Judges made their rounds listening to competitor presentations and individually scored various parts of each truck in customization, theme and cleanliness using their iPads. Drawing its scoring process from other subjectively judged contests (like the Olympics), ATSC drops high and low scores in each judged category and then averages the remaining scores for a single score. This makes for a fairer and more unbiased platform for custom builders, fleets and single truck operators to show off their equipment.
The event was well-coordinated with something to do for everyone that came out. Industry brands gave away promo goodies, spectators got to vote in the People’s Choice contest, and kids got the royal treatment – a coloring station, face painting, inflatables, balloon twisting and all sorts of games. As dusk rolled in, everyone got to enjoy the trucks light up the lot for the Display of Lights and Sound, and Wash and Show participants got one last go at cruising the lot and filling out their Competitor’s Choice ballots.
On Sunday morning, ATSC wrapped up the event with its awards presentation and giveaway. Gary Jones took home People’s Choice for his white and gray 1999 Peterbilt 379 (Excessive Behavior) along with points towards the National Championship Series putting him in first place of the Elite Working Combo division. Buck Crombie also picked up points putting his dark red 1989 Peterbilt 379 (Ruby) in first place of the Elite Working Bobtail division. All the contest winners took home signature ATSC plaques and trophies made by Dynaflex Products. Some of the big giveaways included a RoadWorks bumper, Dynaflex Products exhaust kit and Hogebuilt fenders. Bells & Whistles Chrome Shop also gave away a bunch of truck accessories, tires, a seat and a $1,500 gift card.
