STOCKTON SHOW MOVES TO A NEW LOCATION

After three years of successful yet crowded shows in the parking lot of his
store, Bob Hitchcock of Cherokee Truck Parts in Stockton, CA decided it was
time to move his annual event to a larger venue. The new location he found was
an alfalfa field just off Interstate 5 in Lodi. With lots of room, great freeway
visibility and a good turnout of trucks, the show, held on May 14th & 15th,
was a hit.
In the past, only bobtails were allowed at the show because of the lack of space. For many people (with nice trailers), this was always a bummer. But the new location, spread out over 60 acres, provided plenty of room for both trucks and trailers, and still allowed lots of room between each vehicle (this is also good for those wanting to take pictures). Unfortunately, the month prior to the show (April) was unseasonably hot and dry, so the alfalfa was not as lush and green as had been hoped for, but it was still better than hot concrete or black pavement.
Friday night, as the show was just getting started, the trucks lit up the sky with a dazzling display of lights for all to see as they passed by on the highway. Heck, you could probably see some of these trucks from space! Mike Maggini’s yellow Pete with green flames was, as usual, a real stand-out, earning him top honors in the Light Show.
Saturday morning came quickly, but Bob and his friends were ready. With over 100 trucks in attendance, there was plenty to see and talk about. With help from James Cotta and Frank Pangburn from Truckin’ for Kids, Bob ran a loose and fun show - no white glove judging here! Raising money for the local Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Sacramento, Bob and several of his vendor friends donated items to be raffled off such as stacks, a headache rack, bumpers and lots of other stuff. But the really cool raffle prize, a complete hood, fenders and grille for a Peterbilt 379, was donated by Interstate Truck Center and assembled onsite for all to see. A few of the winners auctioned off some of their prizes and donated some (or all) of the money collected to the Shriners. Erikka Pounds of Central Valley Transport won a bumper and then sold it to John Testa. She kept half of the money and gave the other half to the charity. The raffle turned into a real fun auction - and everybody became a winner!
Under perfect blue skies and warm temperatures, the winners were announced and the trophies were handed out. Once again, for the 4th year in a row, Bill and Marie Sandvik of Sandvik Trucking walked away with one of the bigger trophies, but this year they left a few behind for some other folks too. David Herrera’s black and metallic orange Peterbilt took a few awards as did Cory Cloward (be sure to read his story in Readers And Their Rigs) and Boomer Baer. Although Gerry Hargiss’ neat white Pete with red flames and red grille and surround may have only taken home a 3rd Place trophy, his ride was one of the coolest in the place. This show tends to attract more Peterbilts than anything else, and this year was no different.
Because of some judging problems this year, Bob is considering having a jamboree-style show next year where competitors and attendees simply vote for their favorite truck. With no “official” judging, Bob thinks the show would be more fun and relaxed for everyone. We tend to agree with that. Call Bob at the store (209-462-3694) and let him know what you think. No dates have been announced yet for next year’s show, but we will keep you posted as information becomes available. As for this year’s winners, we’d like to say congratulations to you all.
